Hi there
I am new to this very interesting board.
It's great to see Mauritian rockers having a space to share.
Been playing guitar for 4 years and the list below are songs that I can play:
Nirvana
Lithium
Come as you are
and nearly all of their songs
Muse
Hysteria
Eagles
Hotel California Acoustic version
Metallica
Enter Sandman (without the solos though)
For whom the bell tolls
Nothing else matters (excluding the electric guitar solo)
Radiohead
Creep
Cranberries
Animal Instinct
Zombie
Red Hot Chilli Pepper
Californication
System of a down
Chop Suey
U2
Without or without you
What songs can you guys play?

Tornado of Souls
A Tout Le Monde
The trooper
The Number of the Beast
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Stranger in a strange land
Moonchild
Sweet Child of Mine
Rocket Queen
November Rain

My keyboard is not very fancy and does not have direct keys for the french accents etc, so I will reply in English.

I have checked your tunes and find them very professional & catchy. Composing a song is pretty hard for me at the moment as everything I play sounds either crappy to my ears or similar to a song I can play. Just one question how long after you started playing did it take you to be able to compose a song? Don't know most of the songs but seems to be a nice set list for a concert. I heard Sweet Child of Mine can be pretty tough to play and November rain is a beautiful song.

I was writing riffs and wannabe songs within one year of playing. Absolutely AWFUL songs, I fear. I played (and sung…) one live with my first band in December 1984, two years after starting the guitar. I pray that no one in the known universe have a copy of the demo we recorded then. I'm even too ashamed to tell the title of that song.

You are obviously a perfectionist (judging from the various topics on the board) and perfectionists tend to be very critical of their own work...so my guess is that your first song was musically decent! Vocally I would have to hear it though
I know this is a complex topic which does not have a direct answer but when you compose riffs, do you sing it in your head and then figure it out on guitar or do you simply take the guitar and try to find a sequence of notes that complement each other?
Sorry for the stupid question but I am sort of looking for some advice on composing my own music and your songs reflect very high level composition skills.
Thanks
Edited part:
For example when you wrote the catchy riff of The Quest what made you think of playing it?

I know this is a complex topic which does not have a direct answer but when you compose riffs, do you sing it in your head and then figure it out on guitar or do you simply take the guitar and try to find a sequence of notes that complement each other? There’s no rules… In 1986 I composed a harmonised guitar parts in my head while walking in the streets, going back from school (a passage of Terra Incognita in my solo album TDR Project - this 12 minutes song is split in two parts in my personal myspace, check the second link in my sig. The harmonised part I’m talking about is at the end of part 1). I composed much more things with the guitar in my hands though, as it’s much more natural. I’m not always trying to compose when I do play. But when I (almost always) accidentally find one good riff, then I’ll search for other ideas for a complete song. Note that I don't consider myself a songwriter, but only a composer/arranger. Songwriting is a different kind of talent which honestly I don’t have. I write instrumental stuff, and vocal melodies almost always comes from someone else. metalleuxhard wrote: when you wrote the catchy riff of The Quest what made you think of playing it? Riffs can start from nowhere, a happy accident while noddling on the guitar neck, a new inspiring guitar sound, a beat on a drum machine… Sometimes, even playing in another room than the usual one can lead to some new inspiration, because of the different acoustic properties, hearing the guitar differently… For The Quest I just wrote that repetitive 7/4 keyboard riff inspired by a particular sound on a cheap Kawai keyboard, which almost called for that riff. I recorded that on a audio cassette, and a couple of years later, a 14th February (I remember the date because the song working title have been “Valentin” for quite some time), I programmed that on a Yamaha QY20 portable sequencer/expander. Then I improvised with my guitar on top of this repetitive pattern, trying to find good guitar riffs. Et voilà…

Sweet child o mine intro riff was a joke by slash and it became GN'R greatest hit...
Funny how cocaine can be dangerous!!! (i'm talking about the song not the drug) Years ago we came up with a speedy Paradise city like outro to Cocaine and once while playing it live while jumping around on stage, i slipped, fell on the corner of my amp and broke a rib.

Hello everyone!!!
Wow i can see that the level of musicians are very high... I can't even imagine myself playing things like Tornado of Souls, Holly wars etc...
I play hardly any covers with my band or by myself (OOPS sorri but i forgot that i still have to learn Feedback songs which are covers from me )... I TRY playing some Satriani, Vai, Govans, Timmons etc but it is only to better my skills... We do mostly our own compositions (which is nothing great by the way)... But what i can say is that till now i have never planned any of the songs i have composed... it just flows out of my head sometimes when the inspiration is high enough...
I have composed many songs in my life but i have also dropped most of them and kept the good ones... Sometimes i also combine riffs from different tune and make it into only one song...
I should say that i have composed most of my best songs during jamming sessions with the band... This is a good thing because everyone in the band brings their input and very often turns into something interesting as many ideas are combined...
So i personally think that music composition is something that comes by itself. No one can force himself to create any music... it's a matter of inspiration and your inspiration is totally influenced by your state of mind...
This is what i can add from my experience...
