So after going to the summer slaughter tour this summer I had stayed away from shows mainly for financial reason lol. However how could I miss soulfly? They are legends in their own right! I had never been to that venue before and I found out that it was actually a bar in the real sense of the word. Pool tables, darts, etc... on one side and a stage and small open area on the other side. NO possibility for a mosh pit whatsoever. Attendance was also surprisingly low. At most there was 100 people. FOR SOULFLY! The huge biker dude standing behind me noticed the same thing: "It's fuckin soulfly people! Look at this! I bet if it was some stupid hardcore band this place would have been full..."

Opening act: Mutiny Within

These guys just got signed on Roadrunner. They sounded ok. It was like mixing regular watered down metalcore (e.g Bullet for my valentine) with the singer from edguy that would occasionally growl. The keyboardist was funny. He seemed very out of place even if his keyboard riffs were amazing. The band used too much sweep picking to my taste and did the dual guitar harmonies in every song... They were however descent and if you like very accessible metal that is for you.

Cattle decapitation

When I saw cattle decapitation I was reminded why I thought grindcore was ridiculous... These guys are however an exemplary band: musically they are very very talented and they are great activists. Their songs are about animal supremacy and how animals suffer when they are slayed to reach our plates. They are all vegetarians in the band. They music is however very stupid to my ears. Tremolo, almost absent bass, grind blast beats and very loud shrieks. The singer kept spitting in the air and dodging to avoid his own spit. He also stuck a finger down his throat at one point and sounded like he would throw up on the crowd. He however was a great growler. His growls could go from guttural low to deafening high. The guitar player was very very very impressive however wearing his darkthrone t shirt. I was happy when they left.

Prong

Prong is your friendly neighborhood's old school thrash band. They were openers on numerous occasions for pantera and sepultura. The lead singer admitted his long time friendship with Max. The bassist is a bass version of Kerry King without the tattoos and the drummer is sick. He was actually selling t shirts before he started to play and was very nice to converse with. They kicked off their set at light speed! The frontman kept calling people over closer to the stage as there was not a lot of people and people were spread out. I was however on the front row and it seemed to please him that I knew some of the words to their songs. I literally went crazy on the classic "snap your fingers snap your necks." Prong was great. They heated up the crowd and woke up the sleeping headbangers.

Soulfly

Soulfly took forever to get ready. Max's daughter was hanging out around the stage and the crowd kept asking her the setlist but she said she did not know. A glimpse of Joe nunez walking by created huge cheers. A next glimpse of Bobby Burns and Marc Rizzo sent the crowd in a frenzy. Lights were dimmed and the human God, Max Cavalera walked on stage and soulfly kicked it off with a HUGE "Blood fire war hate." Next they immediately went to "prophecy." I was right in front of Bobby Burns and he seemed to be super happy that me and my buddy knew all the words. He shook our hands and pounded our fists numerous times. Next song was after Max talking to the crowd. Bobby pointed at my sepultura chaos ad t shirt and said "refuse resist man" and I was about to blow up being such a HUGE sepultura fan. Soulfly played that song better that the current sepultura could ever play it! The 100 people in attendance went crazy! They then moved to a mind blowing "tribe." Throughout the show I could not stop but noticing that Max's guitar was off. He was palm muting open chords for the entire show and acted like he was playing. He was super high as far as I could tell. His vocals were still as powerful as ever. Done with tribe they called a random kid from the audience up on the stage for a tribal drum jam... I wish it had been me! The kid couldnt keep up proper rhythm and broke Max drum stick and his at the same time but being nice Max didnt seem pissed or anything. They then came back with back to the primitive. After ripping us apart like that Max left and only Marc Rizzo was left. He went on with his usual flamenco jams and took the dual neck guitar out. Joe Nunez then played a bit with the crowd and Max came back to complete my life... They played roots blood roots which is my all time sepultura song and used to be our signature song with nonsense. It was an amazing moment. Probably one of the best moments of my life. in the middle of it they played the riff to raining blood and went up to play their final song " warmageddon" Soulfly left the stage and I was pissed that I could not grab Joe Nunez's drum head when he threw it right over my head but I got Bobby Burns' pick and that is enough for me. Now 2 days after the show my ears are still buzzing and my neck still hurts. Good headbanging times...
